Remaking Dark Shadows
I was too young to watch the original Dark Shadows (born 1968) but I have watched a few episodes online and saw the New Beginnings TV movie. I love anything to do with vampires, so was really pleased to hear that my favorite actor Johnny Depp was going to play Barnabas Collins. This will attract a new audience to the show and maybe they will even check out the original for comparison. When Glee showcased Sweet Caroline and Smalltown Girl, the sales of Neil Diamond and Journey Cds went up 50%

Remaking The Thin Man
I am a hardcore movie buff, and think that classic movies have much better scripts than most new movies. There was more attention paid to dialogue and plot development, and no special effects, so the script and acting had to be exemplary, as there were no car chases and zero gravity stunts to distract people. I do like that we can make mindblowing movies like Inception and Pirates of the Caribbean, but could do without any Transformers movies ever. I collect black &white screwball comedies and mysteries as well as newer releases. My favorite classic stars include Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn,James Stewart, Gregory Peck, and William Powell.
I guess Depp is a fan of William Powell as well, because he has signed on to play him in a remake of The Thin Man. I have never wished I was a hot young actress more! Wouldn't it be great to play Nora Charles? I love the little dog Asta too. Below is a trailer from the Original Thin Man.

To Make or Not to Make
My sister (and most film critics) think that no movies should be remade. I disagree to a point. I think there are some masterpieces that should never be touched, (Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Philadelphia Story) but I have enjoyed quite a few remakes. Did you know that the new Adam Sandler movie Just Go with It is a remake of a 1969 movie called Cactus Flower with Goldie Hawn and Walter Matthau? So that goes to show that if the right actors are in the remake,it can do well. Did you know Goldie won an Oscar for the original?
What are your feelings on movie remakes?

Nice work... I love the classic movies, I love the way the actors dressed and presented themselves in a very classy way.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Johnny Depp fan, but his taking the William Powell roll in 'The Thin Man' was a surprise. It's so far removed from his other roles...I'm curious to see what he does with it. As for other remakes...most are unnecessary, and some classics I agree shouldn't be touched.
